Well-Being Approaches

We follow a Finnish philosophy and place a very high focus on life skills, well-being and mental health. Many services are provided as an integral part of the learning experience with support given 'at the point of need' by our qualified staff. We are lucky as we naturally attract staff who are keen to develop and are reflective, holistic practitioner. As such, we invest in them, and many of our staff are gaining further therpay qualifications alongside their work; this means we can offer a wider range of 'on-tap' services.

Current well-being approaches available:                                                                                                                                               Every

Every tuition student has a sensory diet programme to reduce anxiety and also support occupational therapy targets. Each child has specific exercises, table top activities and tasks which are bespoke to them. We also have lots of group sensory processing activities and programmes to help those who are sensory seeking and others who are sensory adverse. Our visiting OTs review progress.

Linda is qualified as a practitioner in Lego Therapy. She is also a teacher of the deaf, and has worked alongside speech and language therapists for many years.

She delivers lego therapy sessions to students at the centre as part of an afternoon of tuition services.

Elaine delivers Indian Head Massage with a particular focus on reducing anxiety in students with SEN or other needs. Elaine is also qualified to deliver touch typing courses and works with students who find writing very difficult.

Elaine is currently a trainee counsellor, and delivers counselling services also.

All staff have been trained by Beverley-Sarah to deliver a coaching and mentoring approach. BS also, as an experienced practitioner, delivers solution focussed coaching sessions which include elements of CBT. If full CBT is required this is delivered by a visiting clinical psychologist. BS is also qualified to deliver EFT , Indian Head Massage and aroma-therapy and all of these are key approaches used. She is also BAGA trained and has worked with OTs to create gymnastics based physical development programmes. BS also leads on sensory processing, drawing for talk, freedom dance and behaviour

support. She has also just completed training in one health animal therapeutic work and we are getting centre pets to help us deliver this.

Thera-play is used throughout the centre, along with weighted therapy, dark dens and other tools to reduce anxiety. We have several staff who are training in full play therapy currently, as well as staff training in counselling. These are 4 year courses requiring a lot of dedication and it is wonderful that we are able to attract so many trainee practitioners as we benefit greatly from their enthusiam and expertise.

Textiles, clay, art, wire work, knitting and all forms of artistic expression are used to provide opportunities to explore emotions, have fun and relax. Our resources are extensive and students have free access.

Sarah, a trainee art therapist, delivers a weekly rotated timetable of experiences.

Yoga, martial arts, meditation are all used regularly to improve focus and reduce anxiety. We also use the beautiful outdoors environment locally to further enhance this work.

James, our drumming tutor, uses marching band percussion to improve confidence, coordination and create collaboration. Emma, our qualfied drama teacher, delivers confidence boosting sessions and life role plays such as preparing for college interviews.

Fully qualified advice on nutrition, anger management and physiology is provided by Marc and Vanessa from MASK personal training.

They also run core strength and anger control classes based on martial arts.

Students can join our holistic martial arts club and gain belts at the centre.

The whole approach is around full holistic well-being; mind and body. Not just 'lets do martial arts as a way of getting rid of aggression' . A very special class - delivered by very special practitioners. Highly recommended!

We also integrate life skills - everything from cooking to economics to catching the bus - fully into our learning programmes. We actively teach philosophy, ethics and psychology.
