We did this cross-curricular project a few years ago and students created gigantic venician style masks on black card with pastels - absolutely superb!
We studied The Theif Lord too, and considered the different reasons for wearing a mask and masks used as metaphors!
I've gone a bit multi-media this year and started a quilling mask (paper folding). You can do this really easily with a lot of patience, some pva glue and some thin strips of paper - which can even be taken from magazines, gift bags and scrap.
Liturature wise there's still good old Corneilai Funke but what about trying to read some of the Phantom of the Opera with the masked villian, reinterpreted into almost an anti-hero in the musical version .... and have a go yourslef!
Can you ....
Make masks in mixed media or have a go at quilling?
Have a go at using bright media on black card?
Draw a masked villain or hero?
Create a description of seeing a masked figure in a mysterious setting - how does the site of them make you feel?
THIS TASK IS SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES! (The black masks below were made by Y3 students in a primary school I used to work in) IF YOU ARE A VISITOR TO THIS WEBSITE OR A SIBLING YOU CAN TAKE PART TOO! AND SEND ME YOUR WORK AND I'LL POST IT!
