Sadly, we are seeing an increasing number of students breaking down in the first few years of secondary school. This is for a variety of reasons; many schools are starting GCSE programmes a year early (Y9) and some students are not necessarily ready for this, some students can’t cope with the transition and change of expectations as they move from primary into year 7, some students have been mis-diagnosed earlier in their school career and their level of stored anxiety not fully recognised or supported, some students experience bullying, for some students just the social pressures and expectations they feel society puts on them is too much. Where possible we like to support both schools and parents and help to keep our young people attending, but sometimes students develop such acute mental health needs that they are not able to attend.
Tuition and well-being sessions take place between 13:00 and 4330 pm, with the opportunity to extend to 5:30 pm with social club style learning also attended by kids who go to schools locally. This enables students to mix with school attenders at clubs as well as enabling parents to attend our support meetings and events in the mornings. Many of our clients find mornings very anxiety inducing as they have issues with sleep, so coming to tuition sessions in the afternoon works out very well for them. It also means that students can KEEP their place at a registered school or register with the online school 'virtual school' offered by the LEA.
In addition if the student is ready to return to school, they can start part time in the mornings with our staff attending with them. LEA funded students can also sign up to the virtual learning offer or A2E in the mornings as their registered school provision. The free mornings also help families to attend CAMHs appointments. For our private clients it means the mornings are free for forest school, home education clubs, or accessing our own online learning service which will be launched in September.
We offer a very broad curriculum for this age range, and students are grouped for tuition via personality, interests and ability rather than academic year group. Through all our sessions staff are looking out for rising anxiety and we will encourage students to engage in well-being and therapeutic approaches to control their anxiety. We work towards 45 minute holistic learning sessions, but seek to meet students where they are – so if a student needs shorter learning bursts initially this will be facilitated.
Our centre doesn’t feel like a school, because it isn’t one. We do not deliver tuition during more than 10 potential school based hours a week; so you can also attend our services as an out reach service and combine with a registered school too if this is appropriate. We follow a Finnish curriculum model with a high focus on practical and real experiences, personal development and learning in context.
FUN. HOLISTIC. NURTURING.
